Thank You For Caring
Translated by Dawn Lim

A simple “thank-you” may move some people to tears.
66-year-old widow Mdm Mia (pseudonym) lived with her 40-year-old daughter who had cataracts. This eye disorder had caused her daughter to become completely blind. Her daughter’s condition worsened over the years and Mdm Mia seldom went out to work. Consequently, her daughter became emotionally unstable and tried to commit suicide on a few occasions when Mdm Mia left her alone at home. Mdm Mia had no alternative but to remain at home to take care of her. Without any source of income, they could only rely on food aid offered by neighbours and 7979 Manna Food Bank.
With teary eyes, Mdm Mia could only respond with a simple “thank-you” every time the volunteers from Sandakan Baptist Church dropped by her house to deliver Manna Food Bags. Her heartfelt gratitude never failed to move the volunteers to tears. To the volunteers, their action was a small gesture but to Mdm Mia, the small gesture reminded her that there were still people in this world who cared for her.
