Joining Hands to Care for Seniors in Kudat, Sabah — 7979 Bahagia Berlimpah · Kudat, Sabah
Kudat was once the political and administrative centre of British North Borneo, now known as Sabah. As times have changed, this once-bustling port town welcomed a different kind of meaningful encounter as “7979 Bahagia Berlimpah” made its first visit to Sabah and reached out to the community in Kudat.
To better equip volunteers in caring for seniors, 7979 organised the “Caring Begins with the Feet” Workshop at Basel Christian Church of Malaysia Kudat, on 4 June 2026. International nail care instructor Ms. Vivien Cheah from Glitz Nail Supply and her team were invited to train 12 participants. Through the workshop, 7979 hoped to equip participants with proper foot-care knowledge and practical skills, enabling them to reach out to seniors in the community who have limited mobility or lack adequate care.
The following day, on 5 June, 7979 Bahagia Berlimpah conducted a community service programme, with 31 volunteers serving 33 seniors. Services included health screenings, traditional Chinese medicine consultations, foot care, free haircuts, and individual portrait photography.
The programme brought together several churches from the Kudat district of the Basel Christian Church of Malaysia. We are also grateful to State Assemblyman Datuk Ben Chong Chen Bin, Syarikat Lui Kim Chock Sdn. Bhd. for sponsoring event supplies, and Osteo HealthCare and Royal Nails Studio for providing professional services. The collaboration was a meaningful demonstration of how churches, the community, and wider social resources can work together to care for seniors.
Disaster Risk Reduction Education — From Schools to Communities
From June to July 2026, 7979 continued to bring disaster risk reduction education and awareness programmes to schools, kindergartens, and churches, helping people of different age groups strengthen their disaster preparedness and emergency response skills.
During this period, 7979 conducted children’s disaster risk reduction awareness programmes at SJK(C) Mun Yee, Setapak, Kuala Lumpur; SJK(C) Jinjang Tengah 2; SJK(C) Lenga, Muar; SJK(C) Tai Tong, Sandakan; and Sandakan Baptist Church Kindergarten. A disaster risk reduction talk and simulation exercise were also held at Li Xin Baptist Church, Penang, extending disaster preparedness education beyond schools into churches and communities.
Whether it was a school with 734 students, a smaller school with only 53 students, or a church disaster risk reduction talk attended by 43 participants, 7979 believes that everyone deserves the opportunity to learn disaster preparedness skills and to better protect themselves and others.
13th 7979 Companionship Class Teachers’ Training Camp
The 13th 7979 Companionship Class Teachers’ Training Camp was held from 25 to 28 May 2026 at Johor Jaya Vision Church, Johor Bahru. A total of 45 teachers from 17 churches across Malaysia gathered for four days of learning, sharing, and hands-on training to strengthen their ability to support children in their growth.
This year’s theme was “Becoming Companions to Children in the AI Era.” The main session was conducted by Rev. Chin Ooi Chew, who guided the teachers in understanding the needs of children growing up in today’s rapidly changing world. In addition, Alvin Chuang from Trauma Tech Education Academy Malaysia conducted training in CPR and the Heimlich Manoeuvre, combining theory with practical exercises to equip teachers with essential emergency response skills and enhance their ability to safeguard children.
Through ongoing training and development, 7979 hopes to continue equipping after-school care teachers and working alongside churches to support children in their growth and help build a more hopeful future for them.
“How to Use a First Aid Kit” Workshop
On 8 July 2026, 7979 organised the “How to Use a First Aid Kit” Workshop at Muar All Nations Sanctuary, with a total of 14 participants.
We are grateful to Alvin Chuang for conducting the session. Through both theory and hands-on practice, participants learned proper first aid knowledge and techniques while also correcting common misconceptions about first aid. 7979 believes that first aid is not only a professional skill for healthcare personnel, but an essential life skill that everyone should have.
“Journeying with Seniors · 7979 Bahagia Berlimpah” Health Awareness Talk
On 23 July 2026, 7979 organised an online health awareness talk themed “Pastoral Care for Seniors in Practice”, featuring experienced pastor Rev. Chong Yoke Fun as the speaker. A total of 58 pastors, ministry leaders, and church members with an interest in senior ministry participated.
Rev. Chong emphasised that the heart of senior ministry is helping them to recognise their own value. She encouraged churches to discover and affirm the gifts, talents, and life experiences of seniors, while creating opportunities for them to participate in ministry. Ministry workers are also encouraged to move beyond the role of simply being “caregivers” and become “companions”, journeying alongside seniors and empowering one another.

These supplies will be distributed through the 7979 Manna Food Bank to families in need. 7979 sincerely thanks every generous partner for their support, enabling care and assistance to continue reaching communities and bringing warmth to more families.

Throughout the day, participants also took part in sharing sessions and group discussions, learning to establish healthy boundaries in ministry while caring for their own emotional needs as they continue supporting people in need.
